FIREFIGHTERS tackled a midnight blaze onboard a cruiser on the Ings Lock canal in which a dog died last night.
The 25ft boat, on the canal behind Howarth Timber on Doncaster Road, was well alight when Wakefield firefighters got the call at 11.56pm.

Crew manager Allan Senior said aerosols and LPG canisters onboard caused explosions and banging, and that compounded with the boat drifting freely in the direction of Wakefield made in difficult to control.

After the blaze was put out, which totally gutted the boat, crews found a dead dog onboard.

They then had to circle the boat, which was partially sunk, with an inflatable hose to stop fuel escaping into the canal.

Firefighters then had to make a thorough search of the area around where the boat was found to ensure no one was in the water.

A cause of the fire has not been established.

Police and the Environment Agency have been informed.
