Couple's diamond joy
IF music is the food of love then diamond wedding couple Marie and Dixon Holliday will never go hungry.
Former church organist and choir conductor Dixon met Marie at a chapel in Outwood when they were both 19.
Mr Holliday was serving with the Fleet Air Arm at the time and four years later they were married, the day before Mrs Dixon's 23rd birthday.
The couple lived with Mr Dixon's parents in Newton Lane for six years before moving into their first home, a flat in Wrenthorpe.
They have three daughters, Christine, 56, Mary, 54, who now lives in Scotland, Karen, 47, and son Brian, 41.
After leaving the forces, Mr Holliday worked as a sales rep for Edward Whites wholesalers and later worked as a milk tanker driver.
But it was music that was his real driving force, and he was the conductor of the West Ardsley male voice choir for 12 years and played the organ at Borne Chapel for more than 30 years.
Mrs Holliday, 84, was a dinner lady at Wrenthorpe School for 16 years.
She said: "We've had our ups and downs over the years but we've always spent a lot of time together, especially going on holidays, and the whole family would go to watch my husband play the organ.
"He always says to me, 'I don't know what I'd do without you.' We're very happy together."
The couple celebrated their wedding anniversary, which was last Wednesday, with their children, seven grandchildren and two great-grandsons at a family party at Queens Drive Fisheries in Ossett on Saturday.
Mr Holliday, 83, said: "I think with all things, the secret to happy marriage is give and take – and we're very happy. I'm looking forward to celebrating this weekend."
